What’s Happening … May 2025

President's Message

Another wonderful season in PPWA is coming to close. This year has been fun and enriching and exciting in so many ways. May 31st also brings with it the end of my term as your PPWA President. I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve and support the membership and work with all of the fantastic volunteer leaders in our organization. I appreciate all our leaders and especially the Board members who work so hard to make our organization great. It has been a great pleasure to be part of that team for the past four years as Vice President and President. I am very happy to pass the gavel to our new team and I look forward to continuing my PPWA involvement in other roles. To all PPWA members I say thank you for everything and I hope you enjoy a happy and healthy summer full of fun times with loved ones. Safe travels north and come back soon! For those staying here all summer, I will see you "around the pointe" as we continue to have fun together in many of our year-round activities and events. Best wishes to all.

Membership News

Our membership is now at 667 ladies – all able to enjoy the 40+ Activity Groups PPWA offers.

We encourage all to renew their membership in early June, as this helps PPWA with financial planning and reservations for events in the coming year.

  • To renew, members simply have to sign on to ppwavenice.org on June 1 and click Renew.  You’ll be guided through the few screens required and prompted for payment.
  • When renewing your membership, take a look at your list of Activities and see if there are some new ones you’d like to try.  From your Profile at the top right of the screen, choose More Member Options > Groups Additional Members
  • Ladies are asked to upload a photo to your profile.  To do so, from your Profile choose Standard Member  Directory > Photo > Select Photo.

If you need help renewing in June, contact Membership Chairs Karen Proctor or Lisa Murphy.  Both are happy to assist.

Please welcome our new PPWA members!

Medical Equipment Loan, (MEL)

Thank you Marty Dych for volunteering to run (MEL)!

Members who are willing to store equipment in their homes may contact Deb Bevis. The equipment would be divided up among homes so no one person has to store more than they are able.

Medical equipment loan is a service provided to PPWA members by PPWA members. A network of women store medical devices such as walkers, canes and knee rollers that may be borrowed when needed by someone in our membership.  To make a request an email would be sent to Marty Dych specifying the item(s) and dates needed.  Storage of these items will be at individuals’ homes and then Marty would give the contact information to the person needing the equipment so they could arrange the pickup.

Inventory: 4 canes, 2 knee rollers, 4 folding walkers, 1 folding wheelchair, 1 set of crutches, 3 bath benches.

Activity Leaders Needed

PPWA NEEDS YOU

PPWA welcomes and encourages volunteers to serve as Activity Leaders. Any PPWA member in good standing may volunteer to be an Activity Leader.

Contact the Activity Leader Coordinators;

Belinda Stovall, 919-607-0036 (stovall.belinda@gmail.com) or

Deb Bevis, 917-837-1724 (connectds@gmail.com) for more information.

We currently need Activity Leaders for the following activities:

Current Topics

The theme of CT is The Legacy of Women: Role Models and Rogues.

The format is usually the last Wednesday of the month from 4 to 5 pm from October to April or May.

The social hour follows with some people staying for dinner as well.

If you are considering becoming an Activity Leader and taking over Current Topics, I know that you will be amazed at the number of people who volunteer to help you.  You may change anything you that you want to. Change keeps us resilient and fresh.

Call me or email to discuss your interest in this fun and rewarding involvement with PPWA.

Donna Sweet, Current Topics Activity Leader

Kitchen Divas

Kitchen Divas is for all ladies that are interested in cooking and learning new entertaining ideas and/or recipes. We meet four or five times a season, November to April, at various locations. The group is not limited to a restaurant or club but can be dedicated to learning how to make a charcuterie board or a new cocktail.  The AL can use her imagination here. Generally, a menu is selected with the chef who then demonstrates the selections (appetizer, entree, or dessert) and shares his cooking tips with us. The best part is when we get to sample the lunchtime meal!

Editor's Corrections

Please note that the correct amount for the 2025/26 Garden Club supplement dues is $7.

Please note that Mary Ellen O'Rourke's husband's correct name is Charlie.
Sorry for these errors and any confusion they may have caused!

PPWA ByLaws and Policies

At the recent Annual Meeting held on April 21st the membership ratified an amendment to the PPWA ByLaws concerning the residency requirement for Executive Board members. The Board has also worked to update PPWA Policies & Procedures to accurately reflect all of our current rules and operating practices. Both of these documents can be found on our website under the Members tab > Documents. Please follow the links for easy access to our updated ByLaws Amended 2025 and PPWA Policies & Procedures 2025

Board Election Results
Congratulations to the new PPWA Executive Officers who were each elected for a two-year term by the members at the Annual Meeting on April 21st. Terms will begin on June 1st and run through May 31st, 2027. Our new Officers are:
President ~ Brenda Hankard
Vice President ~ Cynthia Herbrandson
Secretary ~ Diane Santoianni
Treasurer ~ Lynn Bisighini
We thank them for volunteering to serve PPWA and wish them every success in their new roles.

Garden Elementary School Donations

Once again PPWA will join forces with the PPG&CC community at large to collect much-needed school supplies for our youngest neighbors across Center Rd at Garden Elementary School. There is greater need for assistance by local families in Venice than many of us realize. Details about what items are needed and how to donate purchased supplies or make a monetary donation will be sent out by email later this month by this year's coordinators Robbie VonSalzen and Vicky Ahern. Donations will be collected during June and July.  We appreciate all donations and thank you in advance for your generosity.

Message From a Fellow Member

A long time PPWA member who recently moved from our community sent these warm words about our organization. We already miss Marcia and appreciate her volunteer efforts to manage our Lending Library.  (edited & printed with permission)

"My participation in PPWA for many years has been a highlight for me living in Pelican Pointe from Kayaking to Lunch Bunch; Theater; Art on the Run; Garden Club; Kitchen Divas; Current Topics; Core Strength, Stretch, & Balance; Wine Tasting; and of course the Lending Library.  There have been many wonderful, strong leaders who have contributed to the growth of PPWA and its significance for women in our community.  As we’ve taken our next step with our move to Aston Gardens, I must bid farewell to PPWA, but I will always be grateful for the memories of friends made, lunches enjoyed, and activities experienced."

Sincerely,

Marcia Murphy

Arts & Culture

Art on the Run

On Friday, April 4th, twenty-five members of the Art on the Run Group spent a whimsical day in Sarasota.  After enjoying a lovely lunch at the Tripletail Seafood and Spirits Restaurant, we made our way to the Marietta Museum of Art and Whimsy.  We were greeted by the museum’s founder, Marietta Lee, and she provided a wonderful description of the history and purpose of her family’s museum, which started in Connecticut and made its way to southwest Florida.  Each piece of art is selected with one major goal in mind – make the viewer smile!  Marietta is both a nurse and an artist, holding a Master’s degree in each field.  We spent nearly two hours visiting the indoor and outdoor exhibits and gardens experiencing the eclectic collection of paintings, sculptures and mixed media which demonstrate that art can be a positive force in our lives.  When you look at the pictures of our group throughout the day, we are sure you will agree the goal of making the viewer smile was certainly achieved!

We would like to thank all of the members who joined us this season for our four events.  It’s been a great year, and we have already begun to plan for next season.

Theater Club finished the season with a tremendous performance of Les Miserables.  We are comparing brochures from area theaters and will be securing tickets over the summer for next season.  Some shows that are available are “Moving Out” with songs from Billy Joel , “Some Like it Hot” a super-sized all-out song-and-dance spectacular, the beloved classic Fiddler on the Roof” and “A Beautiful Noise” the Neal Diamond Musical.  We hope everyone has a great summer and will be ready for some musical theater next year!

Book Club

Thinking of Joining a Book Club?

Studies have shown that staying socially active as we age positively impacts our personal health and happiness. What better way to stay connected with others and meet new friends than by sharing our love of reading with other like-minded individuals.

PPWA currently boasts 19 book clubs with almost 200 members. If you are thinking of joining a book club, here are some things to know:

  • Most groups meet monthly at a specific time beginning in October, November or January.  The meeting schedule is usually established prior to the start of the season.  Members should try to make a commitment to attend meetings on a regular basis.  RSVPs are requested as a courtesy to the meeting host and to help ensure an optimal group number for discussion.
  • Host responsibilities are shared by all group members so you should be willing to host a meeting or partner with another member to co-host.  Light refreshments are often provided by the host.
  • In addition, the facilitator role is a shared responsibility of all group members.  Often, the host also serves as facilitator for the book discussion.   This means gathering information about the author and book including questions for discussion.  Today, you can find standard questions for stimulating discussion on the internet for almost any book.  Your group leader can help support you in this role.
  • You should make an effort to read and complete the book being discussed.  When recommending a book for discussion, you should have read the book.
  • Meetings should be a safe place for all to express their point of view.  Discussions should focus primarily on the book.

On the PPWA Member Application check “Book Club.”  If you are new to book club, the Activity Leader will be in touch with you to provide more information prior to assigning you to a group.

What about a Couples Book Club?

This is the second year we have offered a Couples Book Club.  Six couples participated this year.  We have very lively, entertaining discussions often reflecting diverse points of view.

If you think you and your significant other might want to join a Couples group check the activity on your PPWA application for next year.  The leader will be in contact with you to provide more information.  The meeting schedule, book selection process, leadership, and other procedural matters will be determined by the group.

Join a Book Club this Summer!

If you are a year-round resident and would like to participate in a book club over the summer months, we have two groups that continue to meet in the summer.  You do not need to be a current book club member to participate.  If you are already in a group that does not meet in summer, you may participate in one of these groups as well. You do need to renew your PPWA membership to participate.
The Cover Girls meet at 3:00 PM on the first Monday of the month.  Contact the group leader, Mary McKay for more information.
The BIG Book Club meets at 7:00 PM on the first Tuesday of the month.  Contact the group leader, Karen Benning, for more information.

Thanks to our Book Club Leaders!

Leaders of our 19 groups are responsible for maintaining a list of their members, their contact information, meeting schedule, book selections, and host.  They communicate with members through email, phone, and/or text regarding monthly meetings. They orient new members to the group and encourage the participation of all members.   Without members who are willing to contribute their time and energy to organizing and leading our groups, we would have no book clubs.

Thanks to the following group leaders who have generously volunteered their time this past year:

Judy Becker (Cover-2-Cover)

Karen Benning (Bookworms)

Creative Crafts

April’s Creative Craft brought not showers, but a real mix of creativity with flowers, shells, dogs and tile designs on canvas bags. As individual as the woman who created them, each canvas bag is unique.

As this season of crafting closes, hopefully our crafters will continue to create new projects.  A great time was had throughout the year, and we look forward to next season.

Genealogy Club

The last gathering of group members is Wednesday, May 14 at 10am. This final meeting is a research only day as I am not sure I will still be here. In case I am not, former leader Fern will be present. It will be either in the library or small dining room as the TV is not needed. It has been an absolute pleasure being the activity leader for this great group. Feel free to contact me anytime between now and the next meeting or even over the summer with any questions.  I hope to see you again next year.

Service to Others

Grandma's Attic

A big thank you to all the members that store and loan out items for Grandma’s Attic. It’s an important service you provide for PPWA.

As we come to the end of “season”, Grandma’s Attic will still operate. Some items may not be available as ladies return to other homes.

Please contact Debbie's email when you need something and we’ll try to make it happen!

We are still in need of members to store items. Most are not big items: think car seats, booster seats, pack n’ plays. If you can help, contact Debbie.

Pelican Pointe Lending Library

The Pelican Pointe Lending Library is maintained by PPWA volunteers as a service to the Pelican Pointe community.  It is open to all residents.  All the books in the library have been donated by residents of Pelican Pointe.

When you renew your PPWA membership, please consider checking Lending Library as a service volunteer.  As a volunteer, you will sign up for a week of Library Duty during which you will visit the library once or twice (or more if there are a lot of books being returned and/or donated) and sort returned books from newly donated books, shelve returned books, and make sure the shelves are in good order.

As a reminder, we accept both hardcover and paperback works of fiction and nonfiction published after 2020 that are in good condition and appeal to the general population.  We also accept jigsaw puzzles that are not missing pieces.

We cannot accept audio books, magazines, textbooks, coffee table books, cook books, or foreign language books due to constraints of space.

Returned and donated books should be left in the trunk in the library.  Library volunteers will organize and shelve book.

If you have a significant number of books (15 or more) please email Flo Liedel to arrange to drop them off.

Wine & Dine

Destination Dinner

Our April destination dinner was held on April 29th and began with cocktails and a fun party game relating to our "secret" destination.  We were hosted by Bob and Sheila MacGregor.  Our destination restaurant was the British Open Pub.  This was the final event for this season and the most successful. We had 12 participants and everyone had a great time!  We are hoping for more starting up in November.  Don't forget to sign up to join our group.

Lunch Bunch

Lunch Bunch has been very busy this spring. Most of our luncheons have had between 40 and 44 women attending. In March we were at Deep Lagoon. Sheila MacGregor won the $25 gift certificate. In April we met at Millie’s on Clark. Mary Jane Ritacco won the $25 gift certificate.

Lunch Bunch continues through the summer. We only take November and December off. Hope to see you next month when we venture to Harbor Bistro.

Recipe Swap

April was the last gathering for the six Recipe Swap Groups and we all had a fantastic season with many different and delicious monthly themes.  Included here are pictures of the “Original Creative Cookers” enjoying our April theme of “Easter Dinner”.  Recipe Swap has proven to be an excellent venue for sharing creative food preparations, swapping recipes, and socializing with a fun group of ladies!  We look forward to meeting again in the fall!

Have a scrumptious summer!
