What’s Happening … March 2025

President's Message
It was a festive atmosphere at the Clubhouse on Feb 4th as 154 members set sail on the SS PPWA for the “Cruise to Paradise” party. Kudos to the planning committee, headed by Brenda Hankard, that put on this fantastic board-sponsored event. Members had great time and I hope everyone will enjoy the beautiful Cruise To Paradise Party 2/4/25 photo album viewable when logged in to our website, compiled by Risa Fogel.
March kicks off with a fabulous event that is open to all members plus friends and guests. The PPWA Foundation Card & Games Party on March 10th will offer lots of fun as we raise funds for the Scholarship Program. Click here for Card and Game Party details on how to register right away.
April brings with it two important annual events in PPWA. On the 8th the Board will thank all ladies who serve in volunteer leadership positions at the Activity Leader Appreciation Breakfast. This year we are so pleased to include the group leaders of our recipe swap and book groups as well. On April 21st all members are invited and encouraged to attend the PPWA Annual Meeting where elections will be held for new Board Officers. Please mark your calendars and plan to join fellow PPWA members as we wrap-up our current season and usher in new officers for next year. Registration is recommended but not required on the "Web Calendar" PPWA Annual Meeting - 4/21/2025.
We always need new volunteers so please consider a leadership role next year. We have some Activity Leaders finishing up their service, and without replacements some of our fun groups may go on hold next season. Volunteering in PPWA is fun and rewarding so please consider a new role to help keep our organization going strong!

Art on the Run
Fifty members and guests spent a delightful day at Cambier Park in beautiful Old Naples for the 2025 Naples National Art Fair. This event has been recognized as one of the nation’s Top 10 Fine Art Fairs for 2025. The weather fully cooperated, and our ladies enjoyed the exhibits of fine art and crafts showcasing artists works in 17 different categories including painting, jewelry, watercolor, ceramic, metal, sculpture and wood. So many came home with treasures for themselves, friends and family members. The bus rides to and from the event were full of fun and laughter. We can’t wait to begin planning for another Art Festival adventure for next year! We are hoping to squeeze in one more art event before the end of the season. Enjoy photos below!

Current Topics
Current Topics is searching for a new Activity Leader.
The Activity Leader role is a great way to get to know the people in the community. At this time there are 240 members in the Current Topic Group. Since its inception, Current Topics has had a different schedule, different format and various speakers on all topics. Most speakers live right here in Pelican Pointe or in the Venice area. Most speakers are not paid. Your contribution of $5 allows me to buy small gifts for the presenters.
Ideas come from everywhere for presentations.
The theme of CT is The Legacy of Women: Role Models and Rogues.
The format is usually the last Wednesday of the month from 4 to 5 pm from October to April or May.
The social hour follows with some people staying for dinner as well.
If you are considering becoming an Activity Leader and taking over Current Topics; I know that you will be amazed at the number of people who volunteer to help you. You may change anything that you want to. Change keeps us resilient and fresh. I was fortunate to have a group of advisors who made the role of AL easier.
I have uploaded a PowerPoint to the document section of Club Express. There are other documents to view in the same location. Take a look and see who has presented and on what topic.
Call me or email to discuss your interest in this fun and rewarding involvement with PPWA.
Donna Sweet, Current Topics Activity Leader | | Current Topics Dolly Parton Event | Theater
Theater Club agreed with the rave reviews written about Lady Molly of Scotland Yard at Asolo Theater. After enjoying the balmy weather, seafood and conversation at Phillippi Creek Village Restaurant & Oyster Bar, all found themselves entertained, laughing at the slapstick humor and remembering the important history of Bletchley Park. The second event in February was a bus trip to see Crazy for You at the Broadway Palm Dinner theater.
Registration is already closed for our last two Van Wezel events of the season—Moulin Rouge on Wednesday evening March 19 and Les Misérables at a Sunday Matinee on April 13. Inevitably, there may be some last-minute cancellations—Put your name on the waiting list on the PPWA website and you will be contacted if a ticket becomes available.

The new Scrabble time of 9:30-11:30 on Thursdays is proving popular. Our February group enjoyed back to back games, and for the first time tracked the highest scoring word. This week it was “Viperous” for 36 points. Top scorers were Cyndi Wcislo and Lisa Murphy. Sign up on the Calendar for our next gathering on March 13 at 9:30 in the Clubhouse. All players are allowed to use the Scrabble Dictionary before placing their word.

AUTHOR SPEAKING EVENT
One of the more popular books being read by our groups over the last year is Shelby Van Pelt’s novel, Remarkably Bright Creatures about a woman’s unique friendship with a giant aquarium octopus. This best-selling novel has been selected by Sarasota County Libraries for their 2025 One Book One Community Program to encourage reading and book discussions throughout our communities.
As part of the program, Van Pelt will be speaking on Friday, March 14 at the following times and locations:
10:30 AM – North Port Performing Arts Center (6400 W Price Blvd)
7:00 PM – Selby Library in Sarasota (1331 First Street)
No registration is required for these free events. For more information, visit www.sarasotacountylibraries.org. (Thanks to Mary McKay and Brenda Hankard for the heads-up about this event!)
DID YOU KNOW..
The National Library Service (NLS) offers a service for American citizens who are unable to read or use regular print materials because of temporary or permanent visual or physical limitations. This includes those who are blind or have a visual, physical, perceptual, or reading disability that prevents them from reading or holding print materials. Through a network of libraries, NLS offers books and magazines in braille or audio formats that can be downloaded or mailed for “free” (in other words, funded with your tax dollars.) To request an application or for more information go to www.loc.gov/nls or call 800-424-8567. (Thanks to Ruth Farrington for making me aware of this service!)

Attending the meeting were Joan Henck (leader), Ruth Farrington, Sherrill Burns, Marilyn Wetterhahn, Phyllis Parker, Mugsie Sarson, and Liz Burns.
| Creative Crafts
Lots of hearts floating around the Clubhouse this Valentine’s Day! Our crafty ladies made “You and Me” Valentine wall hanging. Again, each was individual as the lady craving it. Lots of techniques previously learned were used in completing this project, with lots of camaraderie and support from other members. See photos below!

From the garden...
The Garden Club monthly speaker for February 5 was Justin Taylor from MRT Lawn and Garden. Justin is a return favorite with a wealth of plant knowledge and always so generous in giving. Pictured here are several of the recipients of the 10 gift cards given by MRT. In addition to these gift cards, Justin also gave his speaker’s honorarium to be used to purchase plants for the Gunther Gebel-Williams statue at the train depot.
| Garden Club made a field trip February 19th to MRT in Port Charlotte. We had a fantastic time starting at the popcorn station then onto the stunning variety of plants, tervis mugs, clothing, metal art and more. Justin Taylor met us with coupons and we bought!
Thank you everyone for time well spent!

We had a nice turnout at our February meeting. A more in depth view of the Family Search website for researching was shared. Our next meeting is March 12th at 10am in the small dining area in the clubhouse! It is important though, that you RSVP to my reminder email prior to the meeting so I have enough copies for everyone. In that email there will be a link for easy registration on the PPWA website. Feel free to contact me anytime between now and the next meeting with any questions. New researchers are always welcome.
Janet Cozza | | | Grandma's Attic
Grandma’s Attic is a service provided to PPWA members by PPWA members. A network of 20 women store baby/children items that may be borrowed when children come to visit. Check the Services tab on the website to see the variety of equipment and playthings we have.
Using Grandma’s Attic is very simple. Please contact Debbie Robertson via email to let her know what you would like to borrow and the dates you need the items. Debbie will put you in touch with the ladies who have the items to lend. It is up to you to contact them and arrange for pick up and return.
We have received a few new items —thank you to ladies who agreed to store them. If any PPWA member would like to become a lender, please let Debbie know. It just requires you to store items you already have.
We do need more members to store items that have been donated. Depending on the space you have, it could be something as small as a booster chair or if you have more room, could be a bicycle. I have someone who needs a new home for a high chair, if we can’t find one, we won’t be able to accept the donation. Please consider helping out.

| | | | | Lending Library
The Pelican Pointe Lending Library is maintained by PPWA volunteers as a service to the Pelican Pointe community. It is open to all residents. All the books in the library have been donated by residents of Pelican Pointe.
As a reminder, we accept both hardcover and paperback works of fiction and nonfiction published after 2020 that are in good condition and appeal to the general population. We also accept jigsaw puzzles that are not missing pieces.
We cannot accept magazines, textbooks, coffee table books, cook books, or foreign language books due to constraints of space.
Returned and donated books should be left in the trunk in the library. Library volunteers will organize and shelve books.
If you have a significant number of books (15 or more) please contact Flo Liedel via email to arrange to drop them off.

Our February destination dinner began at the home of Peggy and Randy Selvey at 5:00pm. We then proceeded directly to the surprise restaurant - Chaz 51. We had 9 guests and everyone had a wonderful time. Great company and great food! We were then invited back to Selvey's for dessert and coffee. The best thing about destination dinner is that the hostess is in charge of the agenda and is free to adjust the format. We encourage others - both single and couples - to sign up and join us! You will really enjoy this fun night out!

This month we are going to Miguel's on Siesta Key on March 12th. The menu is Caesar salad, Veal Piccata, Garlic bread and Strawberry Romanoff. The cost for this meal is $30.50.
We look forward to a wonderful time and hope to see you there.

Janet Roess | | | Not So Gourmet Couples
Not So Gourmet is in full swing. We have 8 groups of 4 couples this year. Each group meets January through April in each other’s home to share a meal. This is a great way to meet your neighbors and enjoy a great meal.
Jan McKeon | Recipe Swap
We now have six Recipe Swap Groups who enjoy monthly luncheons in members’ homes where the host chooses a theme and each member brings a tasty recipe to be shared and enjoyed by everyone. In the past, we have savored food from many different themes such as Holiday Brunch, Super Bowl, Tapas, Kentucky Derby, English High Tea, just to name a few! Below are pictures of three of our groups along with the themes that were chosen for February.
