What’s Happening … October 2024

President's Message

Welcome Back Snowbirds! October brings the return of many seasonal residents and I look forward to welcoming you back to Pelican Pointe and PPWA.

Look for a Save the Date announcement in this edition of Around the Pointe for PPWA's winter 2025 gala event. The Board committee has worked hard all summer to plan a fun party for members. Activity Leaders have been busy planning events too, and I know I speak for all when I say we are so grateful to all our volunteer leaders for their time, energy, and creativity which make PPWA so much fun.

This month we will focus our Website Quick Tips on the fabulous PPWA calendar of activities and events for 2024/25. Always log in to www.ppwavenice.org and click on the Calendar tab to find our complete Web CalendarYou can see one month at a time or scroll through the whole year.

The Web Calendar affords many features to make members' and our volunteer Activity Leaders' lives easier, such as simple registration & cancellation, seeing who's registered, automatic waitlists, taking payments, creating carpools, linking google maps for driving directions, signing up a guest, sending reminder emails, accessing emergency contact information, and much more. Some Activity Leaders will require registration on the Web Calendar and some will continue to handle signups by email.

Read through our Website Quick Tips to learn more, or attend one of our Web Calendar Help Sessions at the clubhouse for members who want to learn in a hands-on format. We're holding two sessions in October and will repeat them later in the season if needed. See the announcement in this edition of the newsletter.

Be sure to save the PPWA website as a "favorite" or "bookmark" on your device for quick access, and always log in. If you ever forget your login just use the password reset feature to create a new one. I look forward to our busy season ahead and thank you all for your support.

Message from our Vice-President

Have you ever considered running for a PPWA Board position? We have Board positions available for the 2025-2027 term that could use your skills and expertise. We are a fun and hardworking group who supports our many clubs and activities.  It’s a great way to make new friends and make a difference in our Pelican Pointe community.  I first volunteered as the Travel Club Leader and am now the Vice-President. I continue to enjoy my time on the Board under the leadership of our current President Mary McKay.

The spring of 2025 will be an election year and the PPWA membership will elect some new leaders to key positions. Please reach out to a current Board member if you have any interest. We are a social organization so interest groups are the core of what we do.  We support Activity Leaders by managing budgets, having procedures in place, sponsoring special events, communicating to all, and problem-solving when needed.  We provide the framework for the ALs to do their jobs.

Check out the Board job descriptions on our PPWA website. Go to Members/Documents/Job Descriptions or click on the link below. Please consider serving in a leadership position!

Web Calendar Tips

This month our website tips focus on the PPWA Web Calendar. All regular group activities and special events are posted on the Web Calendar, which is accessible to all members after logging in. The Calendar is one of the main menu tabs.

Some Things to Know About the Web Calendar:

Every group in PPWA is color-coded to make them easy to find. The Calendar can be viewed in a list format that you can scroll down to find event dates, or you can switch to a grid view showing one month at a time in a traditional calendar layout. You can print the Calendar using the little button on the lower right in grid view that says "Print Calendar". Each event on the Calendar has complete details that show up when you click on that event.

Sign Up for Activities or Events on the Web Calendar:

Some activity groups and special events will have registration on the Web Calendar. Click on the event to open up the details, and check to see when registration begins and who can sign up. Use the blue Register button to sign up yourself, and a guest if permitted.

Paying for Activities or Events on the Web Calendar:

If there is an event cost, you will be prompted to pay at the time of registration using credit card or check. Credit card will immediately secure your spot. Checks must be mailed or delivered promptly, and received by PPWA in a timely manner, or your spot at the event will not be held.

Waiting Lists on the Web Calendar:

If an activity or event fills up you will be offered the chance to be put on the Waiting List and will automatically be notified by email if a spot opens. You must reply to the email quickly or the spot will be offered to the next person on the list.

Canceling Registration on the Web Calendar:

Please use the Cancel button as soon as you know you will not be able to attend the event. This allows a person on the waitlist to register. If the cancellation deadline has passed, the Cancel button will not be available. If the event had a cost, your refund will appear as a credit in your Club Express profile, and you may use that credit to register for future events.

If you need help signing up for activities and events using the PPWA Web Calendar, please come to one of our Web Calendar Help Sessions in October. See the announcement below. We are happy to assist you.

Also below is a link to step-by-step instructions for navigating the new website, managing your profile, and using the web calendar.

Art on the Run

Planning for the 2024 - 2025 Season for Art on the Run is well underway. We are finalizing the details for several fun and enriching activities. We kick off in November with a new creation at Piece-by-Piece Mosaic Art Studio in downtown Venice. This year we will be designing a stunning stained glass Stepping Stone for the garden or for display. We will schedule three sessions with a maximum of 6 participants at each session to allow for individualized attention and assistance. There will be four designs to choose from, A detailed email will be sent to our members later this month with a full description of the project as well as instructions for registering.

Stay tuned for more news regarding our plans for a museum visit, an art festival and other fun art-related activities. If you haven't already completed the application process and chosen Art on the Run as one of your groups, please do so as soon as possible so we can include you in all of our correspondence. We can't wait to restart our activities in the fall and enjoy these adventures with you!

Pinochle

Pinochle Players

We have enjoyed playing Pinochle on the first and third Fridays of every month all summer from 7-9 pm in the Pelican Pointe Clubhouse Library. We have a wonderful group of PPWA ladies who often bring their spouse and/or houseguest, so it is always a fun mix! Sometimes we meet at the Pelican Pointe Clubhouse Grill Room for dinner and socializing before we play. Now that summer is winding down, our numbers will increase as we welcome new Pinochle Players and those who will be returning from vacations or time spent at summer homes. Pinochle Players is a unique group because we can accommodate three to seven people at a table, so we always have just the right number to play!

Pinochle is a trick-taking, Ace-Nine card game, derived from the German game Bezique. Players score points by forming combinations of cards into melds and taking tricks. All materials are supplied and we are happy to provide instruction to anyone who is new or needs a refresher. Just show up to play and we will help! Dan and I have been playing Pinochle all our lives and realize there are variations to the game. We do utilize "house rules" and provide copies of the rules for reference. We always have a good time! No money is involved - just fun, friendship, and Pinochle! Come join us!

Couples Not so Gourmet

Not So Gourmet is a fun way to share a meal and connect with new and old friends in the neighborhood. Groups of 4 couples (PPWA members & their spouses) meet at each other's homes. You could also do something like breakfast, lunch, or beach picnic; whatever the group decides... The couples are paired randomly. The groups generally meet once a month for four months with each couple hosting one dinner. The host provides the main meal and beverages, while the other three couples provide appetizers, salad, and dessert. As the name implies, you don't have to be a gourmet cook. You just have to enjoy food and friendship. You must sign up for this activity group by December 1st so that groups can be formed for the beginning of the season in January. Please contact me if you have any questions.
